F&M Global Barometers

LGBTQI+ Perception Index Survey & Website

Creating a bilingual online survey and results-oriented website for the LGBTQI+ Perception Index & Human Rights Report Card.

F&M Global Barometers created the Human Rights Report Card as an extension of the 2021 White House Democracy Summit. In response to the legislative protections, the Global Barometers team created the LGBTQI+ Perception Index to survey and document the day-to-day climate for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, and non-binary peoples.

The Challenge

After years of mining and reporting on data against sexual orientation and gender identity minorities, the F&M Global Barometers decided it was time to extend their research and reporting to the societal level. Up to this point, they were reporting on legislative and state protections of the LGBTQI+ community. They engaged Tower to create a website to survey and report on both the Human Rights Report Cards and the comparative Perception Index.

Our Strategy

With years of knowledge and exposure to the barometers and their data, we knew that the data visualization of the Perception Index would be key to truly identify the differences in the state-level protections and the reality of the social experience of the LGBTQI+ peoples. Before the data could be reported on, we needed to work with F&M to curate and build out a survey system that included questions rated on a Likert scale and optional demographic data responded via binary questions. The final survey is available in four language translations.

The Results

To date, F&M Global Barometers has received over 165,000 responses to the Perception Index survey. They will continue to launch the survey on an annual basis through their website and report on its findings year after year. Additionally, the now digitized Human Rights Report Cards are shown alongside the Perception Index for 111 global countries for use by researchers, activists, and more.

“Tower Marketing has provided an outstanding website for the F&M Global Barometers that showcases the lived human rights realities of LGBT+ people globally. This visually appealing and functionally efficient website has been accessed by policymakers, activists, scholars and government officials worldwide, and has aided in bringing the reality of LGBT+ human rights into sharper focus.”
